Life phenomenon existed and developed in Gansu for nearly 2 billion years. In the long time, the landscape and climate changed making all living things experienced the evolution of natural selection in the survival struggle thus formed a colorful biodiversity in nature today, ancient fossils are witnesses of these changes. Gansu province locates in a joining area among the Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau. Its unique geographical location and changeful climate indicate varied and complicated environment through geological time. Fossils are the evidences of these changes. Abundant and numerous varieties of fossils were found in Gansu province in the past several decades, some of which occupy a decisive position in China even in the world such as the most completely preserved Stegodon huanghoensis namely ancient Huanghe Elephant in the world today, Hipparion sp. fauna found in Linxia Hui Autonomous Region which is the biggest one among all late Cenozoic fossils mammal faunas ever found in Eurasian continent, Giant-tooth lanzhou dinosaur which is the phytophagy dinosaur with biggest teeth in the world and Gansus Yumenensis which is the earlist example of Mesozoic fossil bird in China. Several thousand pieces of paleontological fossil including 400 pieces of first grade under national protection and 10 restored skeletons of fossil animals preserved in Gansu Provincial Museum provide rich resource for preparation of related exhibition. This exhibition—Paleontological Fossil of Gansu shows mainly paleontological fossils of various geological periods found in Gansu such as fossil fungus and fossil algae of Archaeozoic Era and fossil mammal of Cenozoic Era, also precious fossils collected from other provinces in China in order to emphasize the intellectual and systematic feature of science popularization. Exhibits of this exhibition are arranged in three exhibiting halls: marine animals hall, dinosaur hall and Ancient Huanghe Elephant hall according to the sequence of geological time. Marine animals hall shows various Paleozoic fossils marine invertebrates, dinosaur hall shows Mesozoic fossil dinosaurs, fossil fish, fossil plants, fossil insects, etc. and Ancient Huanghe Elephant hall shows various Cenozoic fossil mammals which is the essence of this exhibition. Abundant fossil specimens and animal skeletons reveal the large quantity and variety of fossil specimen of this period found in Gansu. In addition, earth hall is arranged at the beginning of this exhibition to show appearance and development of life on earth by means of picture, form, large-scale landscape corresponding to five geological eras and simulating-space circular dome. The interaction section at the end of this exhibition allows visitors to participate in the exhibition-related activities such as mechanical dinosaur, dinosaur laying egg, having a race with dinosaur and comparing your own weight to that of dinosaur. Screen-touch multimedia facilities in the exhibition halls with detailed background knowledge on exhibits of this exhibition, single-touch phantom imaging facility in marine animals hall, on-screen assembled puzzle game in dinosaur hall attract more visitors to the museum. Through the above-mentioned exhibits, auxiliary exhibits and various forms of activities, visitors can get a general clue on paleontological fossil of Gansu, further more, on earth and biodiversity on the earth, hence strenghen their concept of cherishing life and protecting the earth of our common homeland. Both traditional way of expression and modern acoustic, optical and electrical techniques have been applied in this exhibition. All the facilities used in exhibition-related activities are mature, reasonable in price, convenient to maintain; showcases in this exhibition are different from that in cultural relics exhibition including half-suspended showcase, open-type showcase, showcase with magnifying glass and inlay-type showcase. The arrangement of these showcases and combination of various colors are made taking visitors` normal and special need, visiting convenience as the priority. Sky blue color used in earth hall indicates universe and ocean, dark blue color in marine animal hall obviously refers to ocean, dark red and yellow color in dinosaur hall refers to the color of the Mesozoic stratum containing fossil dinosaur, earthly yellow color in Ancient Huanghe Elephant hall refers to the major color of the stratum containing fossil mammal. Circular line, semicircular line, arc line, ablique line rather than straight line in this exhibition, changing of the exhibiting route and different types of showcase are used in order to add more interestingness to the visit.Life phenomenon existed and developed in Gansu for nearly 2 billion years.
